Let me just say this upfront—if you’re dreaming of a royal getaway in France, the Waldorf Astoria Trianon Palace in Versailles is about as close to palace living as most of us will ever get (without needing a crown or a royal title).
It’s historic, it’s beautiful, it’s luxurious—and yes, it’s very close to the actual Palace of Versailles.
We were able to walk to the Palace from here.
So if you’re wondering what it’s like to stay at this 5-star hotel just steps away from French royalty’s former backyard, keep reading.
This is my full Waldorf Astoria Versailles Review—with a little history, a lot of charm, and a few tips thrown in for good measure.
Perfect Location
The hotel sits at 1 Boulevard de la Reine, just a short stroll from the Palace gates.
Honestly, the location alone is reason enough to stay here. You’re so close that it feels like the Palace is your backyard.

From the hotel, we simply walked out the front door, passed a few charming streets, and within minutes, we were standing in front of one of the most famous landmarks in the world.

With our passes in hand, we could come and go as we pleased, which made sightseeing much more relaxed.
A Little History
The Trianon Palace Hotel opened in 1910 as a luxury escape for the rich and powerful, and it quickly became a hotspot for politicians, diplomats, and celebrities.
It has even played a role in world history — many important guests during the Treaty of Versailles period stayed here.
During World War I, the hotel served as a hospital for wounded soldiers, a reminder of how deeply the area’s history runs.
After the war, it returned to its glamorous roots.
Over the decades, it welcomed everyone from Winston Churchill to Hollywood stars.
Today, it’s part of the Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts brand, which means you get that signature blend of old-world charm and modern luxury.
Walking through the lobby feels like stepping back in time, but the rooms and amenities are perfectly up-to-date.

Rooms and Upgrade Perks
Our room upgrade meant more space, a gorgeous view, and a little extra luxury.
The room had high ceilings, classic French décor, and a bed so comfortable that it made getting up early for sightseeing a challenge.
The bathroom was a highlight — spacious, with marble countertops and a deep tub perfect for soaking after a long day of walking.
It also had heated floors which was a nice touch.

Everything felt fresh and spotless, with little touches like plush robes and high-end toiletries.

Breakfast Worth Waking Up For
Breakfast at the Waldorf Astoria Trianon Palace is not your average morning meal.
Think fresh croissants, buttery pastries, artisanal breads, and a selection of cheeses that could be its own meal.
There were hot options like eggs, bacon, and sausages, plus fresh fruit, yogurt, and juices.
The presentation was beautiful — like something out of a Parisian café — and everything tasted as good as it looked.
My favorite part? The variety of breads and spreads, especially the jams and local honey.
Sitting there with my coffee, looking out over the gardens, felt like a moment out of a movie.

Walking to the Palace
One of the best things about staying here is how effortless it is to visit the Palace of Versailles — the iconic royal residence of King Louis XIV, also known as the Sun King.
We left the hotel and within minutes were at the grand gates, ready to explore the same grounds where French royalty once walked.
Since we had our 2-day pass, we could visit at our own pace — a huge advantage if you want to enjoy both the lavish Palace interiors and the sprawling gardens without feeling rushed.
Standing in the Hall of Mirrors, it’s easy to imagine the extravagant balls and political meetings that once took place here.
If you plan to visit, I recommend buying your tickets directly through the hotel. It saves time, and the staff is incredibly helpful in explaining what’s included and the best way to use your pass.
A Quick History of Louis XIV and the Palace of Versailles
The Palace of Versailles wasn’t always the jaw-dropping landmark we see today.
It started as a simple hunting lodge built by Louis XIII in 1623.
But when his son, Louis XIV, came to power, he transformed it into the grandest royal palace in Europe.
Louis XIV, often called the Sun King, moved the royal court from Paris to Versailles in 1682.
Why? He wanted to keep the nobility close and under his watchful eye — and what better way than to house them in a palace so dazzling they’d never want to leave?
The palace became the center of political power in France for more than a century.
With its Hall of Mirrors, ornate gardens, and opulent rooms, it was a symbol of wealth, control, and the king’s belief that everything revolved around him (just like the sun).
Walking through Versailles today, you can still feel the echoes of history — from lavish royal ceremonies to the tense moments leading up to the French Revolution.
What I Loved Most
- The Location – You seriously cannot beat being this close to the Palace of Versailles.
- The History – Knowing the hotel’s been part of major world events just adds depth to the experience.
- The Atmosphere – Quiet, refined, but never stuffy. The staff members are welcoming and go above and beyond to make you feel special.
- The Rooms – Big, comfortable, and beautifully decorated.
- The Views – Some of the best in all of Versailles, especially if you grab a room facing the park.

To experience this must feel a bit like a fairytale. Being so close to those beautifull gardens and palace. I like the idea of the passes. I can imagine it’s less stressful that way. Tbh local French honey would be enough to lure me there😉
