There comes a point in life where saving money starts feeling less like a game and more like common sense.
When you get older, retired, or simply trying to stretch your budget, finding a way to save on everyday products just feels good. Gas costs more. Groceries cost more. Even basic household products seem to jump in price every few months. So when people hear about finding items for just one penny, you better believe folks are paying attention.
Now if you know me, you already know I penny shop at Dollar General all the time. Over the years I have found thousands of items there. Clothes, houseware, electronics, food, toys, makeup, and holiday products. Some of my best finds still make me laugh because who would think you could walk into a store and buy something for one cent?
But lately, I started hearing more people talk about dollar tree penny items and I got curious. Especially after seeing videos all over TikTok and reading a recent Reddit thread where shoppers were showing off crazy-good deal finds from different dollar tree stores.
So naturally, I had questions.
Is this real?
How do people find these items?
Do dollar tree employees know about it?
And can regular people actually do this?
Turns out, there is a whole world of shoppers hunting for dollar tree’s secret penny items.
What Is Penny Shopping?
Penny shopping is when an item in a store scans for one cent because it has technically been removed from active inventory. Usually the item is supposed to be pulled from the sales floor by employees, but sometimes products get missed and remain sitting on store shelves.
That is where shoppers come in.
People search for old items, out-of-season items, holiday items, and discontinued products that accidentally remain available. If the system marks it down to a penny, the customer may be able to buy it depending on the store’s penny policy.
Now here is where Dollar Tree gets interesting.
Unlike Dollar General, penny shopping at Dollar Tree is not nearly as organized or talked about openly. A lot of the finds seem more luck-based find situations than a guaranteed system. Some shoppers believe dollar tree’s system quietly reduces certain products during resets or seasonal changes.
How People Find Dollar Tree Penny Items
Most people do not just randomly walk in and magically find penny products sitting around.
There is usually some research involved.
1. Social Media Groups
A lot of penny shoppers join social media groups on Facebook, Reddit, and TikTok where people share SKU numbers, photos, and shopping tips.
Someone may post:
“Check the seasonal section of the store for Easter items.”
Or:
“These party supplies are scanning cheap.”
That sends shoppers running.
People also share shelf photos, barcode numbers, and screenshots from the dollar tree app.
2. Using the Dollar Tree App
Some shoppers use the Dollar Tree app to check prices and product information.
Now, the app is not really designed for penny shopping like some store apps are, but people still use it to compare products, check sku code information, and search for matching items they saw online.
Some shoppers also use a built-in scanner on their phone or another shopping app to price check products while walking the aisles.
There is a price checker in the store. That’s how a lot of people scan to see what the price is. If it says, “see store for price,” more than likely it is a penny. Or it will show .01 cents.
3. Looking for Seasonal Finds
This is one of the biggest penny shopping tricks.
When stores move from one holiday season to another, old products sometimes get overlooked.
Think:
- Christmas decoration items
- Easter items
- Valentine products
- Halloween decor
- Party supplies
- Boxes of candy
- Holiday wrapping paper
Stores are constantly bringing in new items, especially in a busy store where employees are moving fast. Sometimes older inventory gets left behind.
That is why shoppers check the seasonal section of the store carefully.
4. Looking for Out-of-Season Items
People also search for products from past seasons.
Maybe a summer cup collection is hidden behind new stock.
Maybe old dish soap packaging is mixed in with newer bottles.
Maybe a discontinued windex dupe gets forgotten on a bottom shelf.
That’s another way to check. If the packaging is different from the others, then I would scan it.
Those are the types of things penny shoppers love to hunt for.
Is It Legit?
This is where things get a little tricky.
Every store has its own firm policy on pricing mistakes and discontinued inventory. Some dollar tree employees will allow the purchase if the item scans for a penny. Others may remove the item and say it was not supposed to be on the floor.
That is why many shoppers say penny shopping at Dollar Tree is not guaranteed the way it can be at Dollar General.
For Dollar General, in their policy it states that if a penny item is on the floor, then a person is entitled to purchase it.
Still, many people insist there is a legit policy behind how discontinued products are handled. The biggest thing is being respectful. Employees are just doing their job and many times they have no control over what the register says.
What People Are Actually Finding
Some shoppers claim they have found:
- Name-brand items
- Cleaning products
- Seasonal finds
- Holiday items
- Party supplies
- Candy
- Beauty products
- Kitchen gadgets
- Williams Sonoma dupes
- Dollar Tree’s best cleaning products
- Storage containers
- Craft products
Now not every trip is exciting. Sometimes you leave with absolutely nothing. Other times you find something that feels like winning the lottery for one cent.
And honestly, that thrill is part of the fun.
Why Older Shoppers Love It
I think many of us over 50 understand the value of stretching a dollar better than younger generations sometimes do.
We remember clipping coupons from newspapers.
We remember hunting clearance bins.
We remember comparing prices store to store before apps even existed.
Now people use online coupon sites, social media groups, and TikTok to do basically the same thing.
The tools changed.
The goal did not.
People simply want a better price point on everyday products.
And with dollar tree raising prices over the years, shoppers are becoming even more determined to hunt for bargains.
My Honest Experience So Far
Since I am newer to Dollar Tree penny shopping, I am still learning the process myself. Dollar General has always been my main place because their markdown patterns are easier to follow once you learn them.
But I will say this.
Dollar Tree shopping feels more like a treasure hunt.
You may walk through several dollar tree stores and find nothing.
Then suddenly you spot old items hidden behind newer products and score an easy way to save money.
One thing I have noticed is that shoppers who do best seem patient. They check carefully. They pay attention to store resets. They learn packaging differences. They keep up with social media posts and recent Reddit thread discussions.
And most importantly, they enjoy the hunt itself.
Because sometimes the fun is not even about the penny.
It is about the feeling that you beat the system just a little bit.
And these days, finding a crazy-good deal on anything feels pretty satisfying.

I love this article because I fiund a penny item myself at Dollar General. A huge $15 rug rang up for One penny. Every dime & nickel counts.
