If you’ve ever shopped on Amazon (and that is most of us), you’ve probably noticed a small green tag next to certain reviews that says Vine Voice.
That little tag means the reviewer is part of Amazon’s invitation-only Vine program, where dedicated reviewers get to test new products and share honest reviews that help potential buyers make smart purchase decisions.
It sounds like a dream—free products in exchange for your honest opinion—but there’s more to it than meets the eye.
It’s not just unboxing and typing out a few sentences. There’s responsibility, time, and yes… even taxes.
How I Got My Invite (And Why It Still Feels Random)
Here’s the truth: no one really knows how you get chosen for Vine.
There’s no “sign up” button or secret link.
From what I’ve gathered, Amazon looks for top reviewers who consistently leave helpful reviews, stay in good standing, and seem genuinely interested in helping the Amazon community.
So, I am not sure exactly how people are chosen. I know for me, I enjoy reading reviews because they have helped me in the past. I also enjoy leaving reviews about how I feel about what I have purchased.
I don’t leave reviews every single time I buy something but throughout the years I have left a nice amount of feedback.
I’ve always been that person who reads dozens of customer reviews before buying anything.
Those insightful reviews and positive feedback from other shoppers have saved me from wasting money more times than I can count.
So, I started paying it forward—leaving detailed reviews on what I bought, both the good and the bad.

Then one day, I was upset about a product I couldn’t get refunded for because it just tasted… off.
I wrote a fair but honest review about it, explaining what went wrong.
Not long after, I got an email that made my jaw drop:
“You’ve been invited to join the Amazon Vine program.”
I had heard about Vine reviewers before but never thought I’d actually get the chance.
I clicked “Join” faster than I could double-check my cart total on Prime Day.
What Happens When You Join?
After you join, you get access to the Vine central account, which feels like a hidden section of Amazon just for reviewers.
Inside are pages of new listings—everything from household gadgets to tech accessories, pet items, kitchenware, and things you didn’t even know existed.
You can choose what you want to test, but there’s a number of units limit and a few following requirements.
When your free samples arrive, you try them out like any other Amazon customer—you just have to share your unbiased reviews afterward.
Some are positive reviews, some not so much. The key is being truthful and giving useful information that helps potential customers make informed choices.

When I review and test products, I share exactly how I feel about them.
I test them like I would any other product I bought with my own money. I’m not in this to win favors with companies.
If I like the product, I’ll share that and why. If I don’t, I’ll share that too.
I want people to be honest with me about the things they try. These days, it’s hard to know who to trust.
So many people become influencers and get paid big money for their opinions.
I sometimes wonder—are they really being honest or just trying to get a big paycheck?
We don’t get paid to test products on Vine. We just test them and tell people if we like them or not.
Writing Reviews That Count
Amazon wants comprehensive reviews—ones that talk about the product description, quality, durability, ease of use, and so on.
Your vine reviews should be informative and written from different angles—what worked, what didn’t, and what type of buyer it’s right for.
Good review photos make a big difference, too. A clear picture of how the item actually looks, or how you used it, adds credibility.
Remember, Vine members aren’t paid; we just get to keep the items.
That’s what makes Vine voices a valuable tool for Amazon vendors and brand owners—they get honest feedback instead of fake reviews.
Your vine voice badge helps others recognize that your review was part of the Amazon Vine program, which can give shoppers more confidence in your words.
The “Free” Part Isn’t Exactly Free
Here’s what a lot of people don’t realize: being in Vine isn’t totally free.
Sure, the products don’t cost you anything up front—but they do count as taxable income.
At the end of the year, if the total value of the products you’ve received (known as ETV, or Estimated Taxable Value) reaches $600 or more, Amazon will issue a 1099 form.
That amount has to be reported to the IRS.
So if you review a high-end vacuum, a coffee maker, or other pricey items, those “free” products add up fast.
It’s important to keep track of your items, their ETV, and save that tax form for your records.
In other words, while it feels exciting to get free products, it’s more accurate to say they’re incentivized reviews—you’re compensated in goods, not cash, and that value is taxable.
Still, it’s worth it for me. The experience, the excitement of testing new products, and the satisfaction of writing honest reviews far outweigh the bit of paperwork at tax time.
What It’s Like Being a Vine Member
Being a Vine reviewer changes how you see the site.
You start noticing how your words make an impact. When brand owners tweak their listings after valuable feedback, or a shopper comments “This review helped me decide,” it feels good.
You realize your opinion actually matters.
You also start recognizing other dedicated reviewers—people who put real effort into writing high-quality, credible reviews. There’s a sense of community there.

I’ll admit, it’s always exciting to see packages show up at my door—especially items
I might not have tried on my own. Every Vine member gets a unique mix of products, depending on what’s available and what you choose.
Since joining, I’ve received some really great products.
For me, it’s not just a fun way to help others by reviewing items—it’s also a smart way to save money and pick up useful things for the home.
Tips for Anyone Hoping to Become a Vine Reviewer
If you’ve been wondering how to get on Amazon’s radar, this is what I suggest.
- Write honest, helpful reviews for the items you buy.
- Avoid fake or one-line reviews. Be genuine and insightful.
- Include photos and details. Show you actually used the product.
- Stay in good standing. Keep your Amazon account clean—no policy violations.
- Be balanced. Give positive feedback where it’s deserved and negative feedback respectfully when it’s not.
- Be consistent. Do useful and quality reviews.
If you keep doing that, you might catch Amazon’s attention and find that Vine invitation sitting in your inbox one day.
I am not saying you will be picked because I do not know their process, but this is what I do.
Final Thoughts
Being part of the Amazon Vine program has been such a cool journey. For me it means more than just getting free products—it’s about helping potential customers and Amazon sellers by giving honest, valuable feedback.
Yes, there are some responsibilities. The reviews have to be unbiased, written on time, and the items are taxable.
But if you already love sharing your thoughts on products and enjoy being part of something that actually helps others, it’s a rewarding experience.
I started as just another shopper reading Amazon reviews late at night before buying something.
Now I’m part of a community of Vine voices—people who believe in writing honest reviews, helping others, and keeping the review space credible and real.

Wow I had no idea this was a thing. I typically don’t leave a review unless something is really bad but I have absolutely appreciated reading the more thought out reviews.
Thanks for reading!

I would say keep doing reviews and they may pick you!

This was a very interesting read because I’ve always wondered what it’s actually like behind the scenes of being an Amazon Vine reviewer. I liked that you shared both the pros and the realistic side of it instead of making it seem overly glamorous. It definitely gave a better perspective on the amount of time and consistency that goes into reviews. Really enjoyed reading your experience.
